All of Doug's stress and nervousness ended on Saturday, when Doug completed his 1st Triathlon in Plattsmouth. He finished under his "goal" time, and his swim was a lot faster than he had ever done! He even plans to do another one next year (or maybe even 2 next year!!) Plattsmouth is a very challenging course for a triathlon due to all the hills that were involved in the biking and running portions of the race. I was soooo proud of Doug!!! To see him work so hard for so long, and then to see his goal accomplished was unexplainable!
The triathlon was very interesting to watch! Between each event, the contestants had to go back to the "transition" area and get ready for the next event. For example: after swimming-Doug had to put his "triathlon" shirt on and put his socks and cycling shoes on, as well as his helmet, gloves, and sunglasses -- then it was off to the cycling portion of the course, then after biking, he came back to the transition area and drop off his bike and cycling gear, and grab his iPod and change into his running shoes and put on his headband (notice the running picture- doesn't he look super cool????!!!).
Doug's brother, Greg, also did the triathlon and actually won his age division, so he got a medal. The boys both accomplished so much! We are all very proud of both of them!
My mom came the night before the triathlon to help us get ready for it and stayed for the race to help me with the kids. She was a GREAT help! Auntie Debra rode down with Greg at 5am to help/watch too! Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa McKnight came to watch the swimming portion and then drove out on the course to watch the boys run. I got shirts made for the kids to wear that said "Go Daddy Go!" on them (everyone thought they were so cute!). The picture of Samantha cheering on Doug is cute because she got off the ground jumping and cheering!
After the race, we swam in the pool because it was VERY hot that day. Samantha and Alden played in the fountains and I got some sun!
Thanks to everyone who came to watch Doug and supported him along the way!
